Brands that grow online have a plan and review it with data. Posting more isn't on the list.
That's what strategic digital consulting is: the process that turns a scattered presence into a system with direction. I'm Nico, a freelance consultant in Seville. Since 2024 I've delivered 21 plans with this method, for direct clients and white-label for agencies. I'll walk you through all of it, with timescales, so you can judge whether it makes sense for your business. Or apply it on your own.
Step 1 — Audit: knowing where you stand (7 days)
Without a diagnosis, any plan is a gamble. The audit reviews three layers and is delivered in a week.
- Brand and message. What you convey, whether it's consistent across your website and social media, and whether your offer can be understood in seconds.
- Website and user experience. How many steps separate a visitor from contacting you. Speed, mobile, structure.
- SEO, Google Business and measurement. Which searches you appear for, which ones you should, and whether your analytics counts enquiries or just visits.
This is where the real working material comes from. Almost always there are leaks nobody could see from the inside: broken forms, pages competing with each other, active channels where the client isn't. Of the 30 Diagnostic Sessions I've done in 2026, more than 40% arrived without a single key event in GA4.
In my case this step is called the Digital X-Ray: an 8-10 page report, €390 (€290 for the self-employed and associations), delivered in 7 days and 100% credited against whatever you hire afterwards. I cover it in detail under digital presence audit.
Step 2 — Objectives: few and measurable (one 60-minute session)
A wish list isn't an objective. Neither is “sell more”.
I work with two or three objectives at most, each with its own indicator: enquiries a month from the website, position in the searches that matter, new clients per channel. Each objective is anchored to a phase: visibility, acquisition or conversion. They're finalised in the audit handover session.
Fewer objectives, better chosen. Spreading yourself thin is the silent tax on small businesses online. You'll find which indicator goes with each phase in the digital marketing KPIs that matter for a small business.
Step 3 — Plan: what can actually be carried out (90 days)
This is where strategy comes down to earth. Channels chosen according to your client and your real capacity, actions ordered by phase and a calendar that respects your time.
This is where most consultancies fail: they deliver an ideal plan for a team that doesn't exist. My approach is the opposite. I'd rather have a modest plan that's kept up for twelve months than a brilliant one that dies in three weeks. Of the 21 plans I've delivered, the ones that get carried out are the ones that fit on a single page.
If you're a small business, in digital marketing consulting for small businesses I explain how I bring this phase down to earth with limited resources.
Step 4 — Supported execution (month by month)
A plan without execution is a pretty document. In this phase things get written, designed, set up and published. And the consultant doesn't disappear: they support you, answer questions and adjust along the way.
For content I apply Google's helpful content standard: write to answer the person searching, with demonstrable experience. Posting for the sake of posting no longer ranks. It either adds something or gets in the way.
When I work for agencies, this step is white-label. For Doublecheck Projects I wrote three complete strategies between 2024 and 2025, the first one 20 pages long, which the agency presented to its clients under its own brand. Same method, different logo on the cover.
In my case, supported execution is the monthly action plan: from €450 a month, with digital direction, light execution and website maintenance included.
Step 5 — Measurement and adjustment (30 minutes a month)
Every month, data on the table: what brought visits, what brought enquiries, what didn't move anything. Whatever isn't working gets corrected and whatever works gets reinforced.
Watch out for vanity metrics. “Likes” don't pay the bills. The indicators I look at are business ones: enquiries, conversion and cost per client. Once the system is stable, it's time to scale: more investment in what's already proving a return, never before.
| Step | What gets done | What you come away with | Timescale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Audit | Brand and message, website, SEO, Google Business and measurement | 8-10 page report: knowing where you stand | 7 days |
| 2 · Objectives | Two or three, each with its number and its phase | Goals that can be checked | 60-minute session |
| 3 · Plan | Channels based on your client and your capacity, phased actions, calendar | A one-page plan that gets carried out | 90 days |
| 4 · Supported execution | Things get written, designed, set up and published; the consultant adjusts | Published actions, not a document | Month by month, from €450/month |
| 5 · Measurement and adjustment | Data on the table: visits, enquiries, cost per client | Correct what isn't working, reinforce what works | 30 minutes a month |
What strategic digital consulting is NOT
The market is full of hot air. Three things that get sold as consulting:
- The 60-page report nobody acts on.
- The promise of guaranteed results in 30 days. Anyone who guarantees you Google rankings is lying to you.
- The previous client's template with a different logo.
Strategic digital consulting is a method: diagnose, decide, execute and measure. Applied to your business, with your resources, at your pace. That's how I work in my digital strategy service, where the strategy is delivered in writing as part of the Digital X-Ray or carried out month by month.
The first step is free
If you want to know how this method would apply to your project, start with my free Diagnostic Session. I prepare it in advance: before the video call I review your website, your social media and your SEO. In 30 minutes I tell you what I'd do in your shoes. I open 2 slots a week. Book yours.
